Nizhny Novgorod state medical academy
Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy is one of the leading centers for training medical practitioners in Russia. The Academy is named after the city Nizhny Novgorod where it is located. To its credit and dedication this Academy is ranked at number 7 of the 46 higher medical institutions in Russia and is highly acknowledged by World Health Organization and is approved by the governments of almost all the countries which send their students to this academy for gaining superior medical education and training.
The medical faculty came into existence in the year 1920 and was known as the faculty of Nizhny Novgorod University. In May 1930 it became an independent Medical Institute and in June 1994 it acquired the position of being the State Medical Academy.
Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy (NNSMA) opened the faculty of overseas admission in the year 1992 and since then thousands of students particularly from Asia, Africa and Latin America (Sri-Lanka, India, Malaysia, Morocco, Tanzania, Kenya, Syria and others) are being trained in Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. NNSMA has strength of more than 600 plus students enrolled each year.
NNSMA has a well trained, qualified and specialized staff of 722 among them there are 76 professors and 145 associate professors. Faculty of Overseas Admissions has a staff of 166 specialists which rightly includes 32 professors and 56 associate professors.
NNSMA has a unique pattern of educating its students. The class consists of 8 to 10 pupils who are closely and attentively monitored and attention is paid even to their least essential educative demands. NNSMA has a sprawling campus of 8 unique mega buildings, the clinical studies are conducted in well-equipped clinics and multi bedded private and government hospitals. A significant part of the training begins with the observation of patients that aims at improving clinical contemplation of the students.
To describe the faculties at NNSMA would be as below :
Faculty of general medicine
This is one of the biggest faculties. More than half of all the students of the Academy specialize in Surgery, Therapy, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Neurology etc. This course is for a period of 6 years.
Students here are taught and highly trained to deal with the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The Regional Pediatric Hospital and the Institute for Pediatric Research have been selected as teaching hospitals. Duration of this course is 6 years.
Faculty of preventive medicine
Specialists are trained to take measures to prevent diseases, (or injuries) rather than curing them or treating their symptoms. The term contrasts in method with curative and palliative medicine, and in scope with public health methods (which work at the level of population health rather than individual health). Graduates from the Faculty are qualified as Hygienists and Epidemiologists. Duration of this course is 6 years.
Faculty of dentistry
Specialists in Dentistry are trained here. After the basic course graduate students ought to have special primary internship training in the following branches: Dental Therapy, Dental Surgery, Dental Orthopedic and Pediatric Dentistry. Duration of training is 5 years.
This faculty prepares pharmacists. Duration of the course is 5 years.
Apart from this there are 2 more faculties namely Faculty of Higher Nursing Education and Faculty of Preparatory courses (Pre-medical courses).
The Academy has spacious and hygienic hostel facilities for all the students. The hostels are laden with all the necessary amenities to make their stay and education comfortable and enriching. Students also have all the facilities for enjoying sport and social activities: sport halls, swimming pools, Internet, cafeterias are all located in the campus itself.
